Celebrating the Life of Rita Atherton

On Thursday, Park Lane Unitarian Chapel had the privilege of hosting a celebration of the life of Rita Atherton, lovingly described by her family as “71 years young.”

It is always a profound honour when a family entrusts us with the task of helping them say goodbye to someone they love. At Park Lane, we like to think of ourselves as more than a congregation; we are a chapel family. When one of our community passes through the threshold of this life into the eternal mystery and love of the Divine and her beloved husband, Keith, it is a sacred privilege to gather together in remembrance, gratitude, and love.

Rita’s service reflected the warmth, humour, and generosity that characterised her life. Through music, readings, memories, and tributes from those who knew her best, we celebrated a woman whose love for her family was unwavering and whose kindness touched countless lives.

Rita was truly one of a kind. Whether through her devotion to her children and grandchildren, her volunteer work, her love of bingo, or simply her gift for making people feel welcome, she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Rita’s family and friends as they continue to navigate their loss. We give thanks for her life, for the joy she brought into the world, and for the beautiful family who gathered to honour her memory.

Rest peacefully, Rita. Slip on those beloved flip-flops once more and know that the love you shared, the laughter you inspired, and the family you nurtured are a lasting testament to a life well lived.
