History of School Room Window

Long before schools as we know them now were around, the only way children could get any education, was at Sunday Schools. At Park Lane, Sunday School was so popular that in 1867 when a new school room (at a cost of £380) was built adjacent to the north side of the Chapel.(see photo below)

4 of the windows in the east facing wall were donated by a Mrs Francis Morton of Oxton, (near Birkenhead). Mrs Morton had a strong affiliation with Park Lane and the window (1st Picture in the Gallery) was one of the 4 she donated. It is similar to one in the Sunday School she ran in Oxton and it depicts Christ Blessing Little Children.

In the 1890’s (approx) when larger premises were needed and the Shaw Memorial School was built, the old school room was demolished and the window was relocated to a new east facing position, situated high above the stage in one of the schoolroom.

It remained in position until earlier this year when it was removed, due to the window frame needing repair. An excellent job has been done on the renovation and it is now a lovely feature in the Memorial Room.
